New safety scandal just broke. This seems to affect the main Toyota company this time, not just their subsidiaries. Mazda and Toyota have halted sales of some models.

Shares of Japanese automakers have largely plunged since the country’s Transport Ministry found false data used to certify certain models a week ago on Monday.

The stock of Japan’s largest carmaker, Toyota, fell more than 5.4% last week, after the scandal broke on June 3, but is recovering on Monday. The automaker lost 2.45 trillion Japanese yen ($15.62 billion) in market value last week alone.

Shares of Mazda
, the country’s second-largest automaker, dropped 7.7% in the same period, and lost 80.33 billion yen in market capitalization last week.

The wide-ranging inspection by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism also found irregularities in certification applications by other automakers Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha.

Last week, Honda’
s stock fell 5.75% and Yamaha Motor
lost 2.2%, while Suzuki Motor
inched down 0.3%.

Thick (20W-50) vs Thin (5W-20) Engine Oil Tested

Interesting points (skip to the 32 minute mark of the video to jump to the conclusions section):

The oil gets contaminated with water if the filter is not pre-filled with oil prior to installation. This happened with both the 5W-20 and the 20W-50:



The thin oil shows increased wear because of this contamination:



The thick oil, even when not pre-filled does not show increased wear:



In all cases the thicker 20W-50 oil offers MUCH more protection than the 5W-20. The thin oil exhibited increased iron in the oil in every scenario, and in particular after doing a power run on the dyno had 61ppm iron, compared to just 21ppm with the 20W-50. The hosts said that this mean the thick oil is giving 4x as much protection as the thin oil (or perhaps that the thin oil is showing 4x as much wear as the thick oil. I didn't question the maths).

Are those Php 2k+ worth machines found online good enough? I don't want to spend more if the cheap ones can do the job reliably well. I mean, I'm not operating a bank or some such, so I don't need anything overly complicated.

starter solenoid failure

I am posting this here. The starter on my 2009 city failed and was replaced with a surplus unit. I asked the mechanic why the solenoid could not just be replaced to save the starter motor. The reply was that the solenoid and starter motor came as a unit. Anybody care to comment?

Honda L13 vs. L15

Is the engine block of the Honda IDSI L13A the same as the L15A? I was wondering if i could swap out the internals and the cylinder head of the L15A unto a L13A block. Of course the ECU will have to be swapped also. By internals, i mean the crank and the pistons. Top of the L13A with the cylinder head of the L15A, altho the cylinder head from the L13A might be the same. That way, the engine will produce the same hp as a L15A but the block will retain the original engine number. Something akin to using a stroker kit. The cylinder bore diameter of the L13A and piston size is the same as L15A, then i might be able to use the connecting rods from the latter (HONDA L ENGINE WIKI). Shorter rods mean more combustion cylinder volume. Compression ratios will surely change.
